Henry R. Lopez

P.E., Architect, Senior Partner

Henry has nearly five decades of experience as a Structural Engineer and has earned the respect of the community at large as an accomplished and proficient professional dedicated to the highest standards of technical and business endeavors. With his current Licensed Professional Engineering status in numerous states, as well as being a Licensed Architect here in Colorado, his practice has given him a knowledgeable, varied, and personal approach to both wide-ranging and specialized projects in the field.

Henry's education includes degrees from the State of Illinois:

  • Bachelors of Fine Arts in Architecture with a Structural Engineering Major

  • Master of Science in Architectural Engineering with a Major of Building Structures and a Minor in Soils and Foundation Engineering

Henry has also chaired many state and local professional organizations, including the Structural Engineers Association of Colorado, Boulder County Board of Review, Boulder Unit of Colorado Association of Parliamentarians, and the Boulder Chapter of the Professional Engineers of Colorado.

His professional experience represents a large variety of buildings and structures, including residential, religious, educational, commercial, industrial, military, municipal, and historic. Also, his structural expertise in buildings includes everything from wood design, masonry, concrete, precast concrete, steel, and aluminum design.

Henry's achievements have given Lopez Smolens Associates, LTD a broad and thorough approach to building design and solutions.

Jonathan Smolens

P.E., Partner

Jonathan graduated from the University of Colorado Boulder with a degree in Civil Engineering. He is a licensed Professional Engineer (PE) in the state of Colorado since 2002 and also holds PE licensure in the states of Utah, Wyoming, and Iowa.

As a Structural Engineer, Jonathan's expertise includes structural design of new construction, additions, remodels, and forensics for residential, industrial, and commercial buildings. He excels at providing efficient and cost-effective solutions for his clients. He has been a licensed residential contractor for 16 years before engineering gives him a thorough understanding of both building and business practices. Jonathan enjoys bringing his creativity to be unique and challenging projects that require specialized building solutions.

One of Jonathan's specialties is a green building, which includes: straw-bale, adobe, Structural Insulated Panels (SIP's), and high-efficiency wood and steel construction. He is committed to sustainability and values incorporating natural building materials and techniques in his designs. He also has extensive experience in Photovoltaic and Solar-thermal system applications.

Ian Smith

P.E.

Ian brings an abundant number of talents to Lopez Smolens Associates, LTD as a Professional Engineer dedicated to green building ethics and solutions with a commitment to renewable construction practices.

Since getting his degree from CU, he has produced and worked on numerous engineering and architectural projects, including civil undertakings, renovation, and design of residences, commercial, and alternative-construction buildings. Working with many regional structural engineers, designers, owners/builders, and contractors, he has developed both wide and specialized understandings of modern construction and structural solutions. Besides, Ian created one of the first seismic models for straw-bale structures, advancing the emerging field of reusable material and building techniques.

Ian has also been involved with Engineers Without Borders since 2002, gaining valuable expertise in the economical construction methods and styles of developing nations.
